Three Fantastic Moroccan Cities

Chances are that if you're heading out on one of the many trekking in Morocco activity holidays, you'll have a little time set aside to explore the country. After all, with so much history and culture on offer it would be a shame to miss out on the true Moroccan experience. This article takes a look at a few of the best towns and cities in the region, to give you a feel for the great destinations available.

Marrakech

Marrakech is one of the best cities to experience Morocco's traditional side, often seen as a trip back in time. With its old maze like alleyways, large open marketplaces, snake charmers and shouting shop owners, you can experience Morocco's fascinating culture. As with any busy city, a tour guide is recommended to get the most out of it, as the experience can be a little overwhelming otherwise. Highlights include the impressive Koutoubia Mosque, the fascinating Saadian Tombs and the stunning tradition handicrafts and jewellery on show in the Centre Artisanal.

Casablanca

Casablanca has to be one of Morocco's most iconic cities. The city is Morocco's largest, bustling metropolis with an impressive mix of old and new. The city is home to the third largest mosque in the world, the stunning Hassan II Mosque set on Casablanca's beautiful seafront. To experience the older side of the city you should head to the ancient medina, which is laced with narrow alleys and has a strong Spanish influence. For the more modern Casablanca experience the new Habbous medina is a 'must see' with its mixture of great restaurants and clubs.

Tangier

Tangier is best known as Morocco's centre of art, attracting artists from around the world. This link with the artistic world comes from its rich cultural presence and its strong historical presence. Tangier became a destination for many European and American diplomats, spies, writers and businessmen over the years, acting as a gateway into northern Africa. The city can trace its roots back to the 5th century BC, making it a great destination for anyone interested in the regions history. Highlights include the interesting Museum of Moroccan Arts and Antiquities, the beautiful Dar el Makhzen (Sultan's palace) and the Grand Socco, where you can sample the regions great wares.

This is just a small sample of all the great towns and cities on offer in this fantastic country, there really are many more to discover.

Four Great Reasons to Visit the Florida Keys

While Orlando may be the centre for most family holidays in Florida, it doesn't mean you shouldn't consider visiting elsewhere in the state. This article takes a look at a few of the great reasons to consider taking one of the many Florida Keys holidays, as your next Florida holiday experience.

Bike riding in the Everglades National Park

The Everglades National Park is a great destination for anyone interested in the region's natural environment. Entering the park from the northern Shark Valley entrance gives visitors access to 15 miles of looped road with an observation tower set half way round, making it ideal for bike rides. The observation tower gives beautiful views out over the Everglades and the chance to spot some of the park's great wildlife, which includes deer, alligators, water birds and even wild pigs.

The Overseas Highway

Known more commonly as Route 1, the Overseas Highway is the marvel of engineering that connects the hundred or so miles of island chains that makes up the Florida Keys. Running from Key Largo all the way out to Key West, the road gives stunning views out over the surrounding ocean. The road is built on the same bridges and tracks that the Florida East Coast Railway was based on, with many of the bridges being converted railway bridges. The keys also have a number of great walks, for anyone who fancies getting out of the car to stretch their legs.

Visit Key West

This island town is best known for being the southernmost town in the United States. Key West has a very traditional American feel to it, with the town's wood panelled, tin roofed conch houses. Highlights in the area include the home of Ernest Hemingway, now converted into a museum, and the fascinating Shipwreck Historeum Museum, which delves into the town's wrecking past. Taking a stroll around the town is a great way to enjoy an afternoon.

BahiaHonda State Park

The final destination on our list is an easy stop if you've already travelled all the way out to Key West, the beautiful Bahia Honda State Park. The park is set on a small island between two of the key's deepest natural channels. The location means the island is a little different to others in the Key, with its sandy beaches and deep surrounding waters making it ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The Park is also well know for the Loggerhead Sea Turtles that visit it throughout the year.

The Price of the All-Inclusive Resort

More and more, all-inclusive resorts are starting to appear everywhere. They seem to be very popular now and a good deal as well, and many times they are. Among the first to start this trend was Club Mediterranee, Club Med, and they are still around and doing well.

It certainly is appealing for the budget minded vacationer to know in advance how much will be the cost of spending some time in an All-inclusive resort. And this cost can be known to a very close approximation if not to an exact amount. One can lie on a beach or by a pool, have a drink, eat, etc. and not worry about how much one is spending.

On the other hand if one wants to be a true tourist, one must be willing to adventure out of the hotel and explore the surroundings, which in my view is the purpose of it all. I just love the feeling of arriving in a city, having spent the night travelling and getting there early in the morning, if possible, arriving at a train station, and walking out and mingling with the locals going about the start of their day. The feeling is not quite the same if one arrives at an airport, as they for the most part the same, and are rarely in the middle of the city and if they are I cannot think of one where one can just walk out and start walking down the street. There are always taxis, buses, and other forms of transportation, unlike a train station which are surrounded by regular streets, with people, cars, etc.

But if one just wants to able to relax and enjoy doing nothing and just laying around a pool, reading, listening to music, sunbathing, etc. an All-inclusive hotel is certainly a very good option. The price one pays for that is that it is very tempting to stay rather than go out, to eat at the hotel rather than at local restaurant and participate of the evening entertainment offered in-house rather than going to a disco or a local bar. I have known people who have remained their whole stay inside the hotel and then talk to others, with the authority of having been there, about the good and bad things one can find in such and such destination and how it compares to others.

How can one be able to advance an opinion about a place one doesn't really know? How can one distinguish between All-inclusives located in different resort areas, in different countries if one has not ventured outside the premises, except maybe for an activity or two? And what is the difference, really, between laying around the pool in the Caribbean and any other place in the world?

There are places meant to be visited... I can't imagine staying in an All-inclusive in Paris, or New York, for example, and I don't believe there are any in either city, certainly not with a pool and amenities meant to keep you inside. I have trouble to think of places where one doesn't want to go outside. When we wanted to get away, we used to go to a hotel on the beach a short drive from home, to spend a weekend and relax, but it never occurred to me to take a plane to stay in resort and get away from it all in that manner. Until I discovered cruising. Cruising is such a great alternative to an All-inclusive. They both offer a similar service if you want to get away and not really tour, but just rest and relax.

An All-inclusive is a very good alternative when the weather is cold at home and you need some rest. And it should also be mentioned that there are different types of All-inclusives, some more expensive than others, even in the same destinations. One reason for this is the quality of the food, drinks and activities included, so it is a good idea to ask otherwise you might find yourself paying extra for a better quality drink or having to eat out when it wasn't what you had in mind. Another reason for the different in price is the location as some are closer to the center of attractions (outside the resort) so here again it is a good idea to find out the exact location and cost of taxis and transportation if you do plan to do some limited outings.

So, in short, before going anywhere please ask yourself... what am I in the mood for... total R&R, how much can I spend, etc. but just be aware that the price one pays for an All-inclusive is to lose the opportunity to explore new surroundings, know different people and places, and restaurants and views and photographic opportunities, and just adventure. I'm not demeaning All-inclusive hotels but if you can afford to spend your vacation differently, do it. If you can't, then enjoy as much as you can and go out as much as you can. After all life is just one /trade-off after another.

Wheelchairs can also be loaned from the front desk.

The museum is kitted out with the newest technology to cater for visually impaired and hearing impaired visitors.

Bristol Zoo also provides facilities for disabled visitors. The park's trails are suited to wheelchair users. Wheelchairs and electric buggies can be hired at the main entrance. Due to the nature of the attraction, assistance dogs aren't allowed into the zoo's territory, however can be left in the designated kennels where they'll be taken care of during your visit.

The city centre is accessible for all, and most shops and restaurants will have specially equipped facilities. Before setting off, get in touch with your hotel in Bristol city to ensure they have the right facilities to cater for your needs.

A Journey in June Through Dordogne, France

Travelling through France in June is a sheer delight at this time of year. The majority of holidaymakers have not yet descended upon the country and the weather is generally good, particularly in the South of the country. Dordogne is a most charming region, relatively untouched, with small farming communities, perhaps as England used to be a hundred years ago.

The vegetation is lush with many beautiful flowers, trees and plants due to the warm climate and an adequate supply of rain. There are many lakes throughout the region and the south west of France is not only a wine lover's paradise, but a fisherman's, and a walker's dream area too.

Starting at Easter the climate is often very agreeable all the way through to late September, with July and August being for those who love endless warm sunny days and deep blue skies. Many English people have settled in the Dordogne, also known as the Perigord, and enjoy not only the climate, but the unhurried and relaxed way of like that the many small towns and villages have to offer. There is still quite a strong community spirit amongst the inhabitants, and many fetes are arranged throughout the summer months to celebrate the various local products and many local items that have been made for generations in a particular area.

World famous for its mushrooms, 'Cepe' the Boletus Edulis can be sold for enormous prices at the market, and is a delicacy in many first class restaurants. As with the Truffle, this mushroom only grows wild, and therefore areas where the Cepe is known to flourish are kept top secret.

It would be wrong not to mention the many vineyards in Dordogne, the subtlety and numerous flavours can change dramatically depending on the area. For example in the south of the Perigord, the climate is much drier and produces rich sweet wines such as those from Montbazillac. Soil composition also has much to do with the overall taste of a wine, and there are many dozens, if not hundreds of vineyards where one can taste a variety of different crus direct from the producer before buying.

Towards the north of this area is Limoges, a beautiful city known for its production of high class china. Many parts of the city have been preserved to keep an authenticate feel of its character, and these buildings have been cleverly mixed with new contemporary architectures to give an interesting feel to this vibrant city.

To the south is Brantome, known as the 'Venice of Dordogne'. Built by monks hundreds of years before in a stunning white stone, the centre is the Abbaye around which the River Dronne flows. In summer this town is bustling with tourists, but somehow still manages to hold its character, there are many coffee shops, patisseries, and restaurants for all tastes and budgets.

The route of Richard the Lion Heart (Coeur de Lion) is marked along roads throughout the region, but by all accounts, it appears he did little for the region, and died at Chalus in 1199.

Burkina Faso Travel Advice

Travel agencies in Burkina Faso can be a good tool to prepare and implement a nice trip to this African country. Contact the agent to get information about visa, flights, hotels and more...

Burkina Faso is roughly translated as 'the country of honest men'. Indeed, the locals are sociable and hospitable people, always ready to laugh and inviting guests 'for a cup of coffee'. Coffee is one of the 'tourist brands' of the country. This drink is prepared here according to at least 30 recipes, and is always of very high quality.

Ouagadougou, standing at the crossroads of several ancient trade routes, is a big country town rather than a metropolis. The central part of the capital is small and easy to walk during two hours. In Ouagadougou, there are no particular sites, but the capital has a wide variety of epic monuments and magnificent buildings of various ages. There is a surprising number of broad tree-lined boulevards. The country's mild climate and relatively clean air contribute to the general positive impression. Unlike many other cities, Ouagadougou is populated mostly by non-Muslims, which is clearly reflected in its life. There are many restaurants, bars and nightclubs here. When in the city, one should necessarily visit the National Museum, which is still under development. The museum demonstrates the traditional masks, pieces of pottery, and other ritual accessories of the main ethnic groups in the country.

The cathedral, located near Moro Naba Palace, is the largest church in West Africa. The Grand Market of Ouagadougou is located in the city center and has many large decorative towers on top of the facade. Moro Naba Palace is the site where every Friday the colorful ceremony of the 'false departure of the Emperor' is held. It symbolizes the struggle of the Mosi Empire against external enemies.

Bobo-Dioulasso is the 'capital' of the people of Bobo. It is smaller and more modest than the country's capital, but has the same boulevards, tree-lined streets and thriving markets. The Provincial Museum in the building of the Sudanese style has two sets of exhibitions, constantly displaying contemporary African art, batik and sculpture, as well as the traditional arts of the peoples of West Africa. The most impressive buildings of Bobo-Dioulasso is the Great Mosque, built of clay in the traditional Sudanese style, and the most interesting element of it is the interior decoration, which can be viewed for a small fee. The old district is full of craft shops, selling mainly pottery.

Banfora has just two main streets with a gas station, a bank and two hotels. This place is known mostly as the starting point for trips to Karfiguela waterfalls, a rare phenomenon in these places. The falls are especially interesting in the rainy season. The picturesque rock Dame-de-Karfiguela, located near the waterfall, is a good place to observe the waterfalls and the entire surrounding area.

Ten kilometers from the falls, there is Tegreakute Lake, a pleasant place to stay and relax. Fishermen from the nearby villages will be more than happy to show you the place and flocks of waterfowl for a small fee. Gorom-Gorom is a city, typical of the Sahel zone leading into the sea of dunes. This is the place where civilization ends, and the 'whistling silence' of the desert stretches for thousands of kilometers in all directions. The local market is perhaps the most colorful and interesting in Burkina Faso. This mixing of different peoples and ethnic groups cannot be found anywhere else in Africa. The local people wear ornate leather belts and silver weapons. And the diversity of local food and crafts of the desert is truly amazing.

Vahiguya is a typical city of Burkina Faso. Many people come here for pilgrimage to the local mosque in order to mark the end of Ramadan, there is also a Mason-du-Naba Kango, the royal palace of the rulers of Yatenga kingdom.

Going to Thailand All Year Long, Alone or With Family, From North to South, Just a Dream Vacation!

Thailand is a country beautiful during all the seasons although in some periods it is not advisable to go to certain areas because of the arrival of the monsoon season. In November, in Thailand the high season begins. The climate is generally mild. The higher temperature is recorded in the month of April because of Thai New Year (The Songran). In Thailand, the rainiest months are May and October.

For these months there is an alternative solution to the sea: Koh Samet. Koh Samet is indeed the only island in Thailand that is almost never subjected to rains. Koh Samet is a few hours by bus (or car) and Katamarano from Bangkok and it is an island that offers good facilities and a beautiful beach but at higher prices compared to the rest of Thailand.

Koh Samet is mostly visited by the Thais living in Bangkok and it is ideal if you go there to spend the weekend. May and October are usually rainy months in Thailand but they may be ideal for exploring the natural beauty of tropical forests and the falls in these months are in full flow (Erawan waterfalls, waterfalls in the north and the centre of Thailand, waterfalls in the Khao Sok National Park).

Do you want to make a holiday with your kids and you wonder whether it is appropriate to do so? Or would you simply have information about your holiday in Thailand with your kids? Here are some useful information. Thailand is a very peaceful country and in terms of security it is far less dangerous than other countries where there are areas particularly isolated in the evenings and that would be better not to cross (e.g. stations in large cities, dangerous neighbourhoods, etc.). There is no such phenomenon in Thailand.

For both adults and children it does not ever happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If you wish to travel to Thailand with your kids you can spend your holiday in a city like Bangkok, where your kids can have fun in large structures such as Dream World (a huge amusement park similar to Disneyland) or more simply visit the magnificent temples or the shopping centres with them: large structures that will undoubtedly capture their attention.

Even with regard to the seaside holidays, the children will be surely delighted to visit beautiful places like the island of Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Lanta, Phi Islands and many other beautiful places where they can make new friends at the resort or hotel or on the beach where you will find friends of their age!

We Love to Travel

Fifty or sixty years ago travelling abroad for most people was an unrealizable dream. Only the wealthy with a lot of time on their hands could afford to travel to a foreign country for a holiday and even for them the idea of going to South America, Africa or Asia would have been pretty much unthinkable.

The development of air transport over the past few decades has changed all that. Today your often-dreamed-of trip to Cambodia or Uganda or Bolivia or even Antarctica can so easily become reality. More and more people from many different countries and of all age groups are catching the travel bug all the time.

The most remote places on earth are today accessible to the intrepid traveller. Whether it be the remarkable Yemeni island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean or Lake Baikal in Siberia, or Aitutaki in the South Pacific, none of the destinations in this book should be much more than two days`total travelling time from a major airport - provided you have the determination, energy and money to go there, of course. Truly the world now is your oyster.

Some of the must-visit destinations are great wonders of nature, but the majority are creations of human beings - towns and cities, cathedrals, castles, museums, gardens and markets - all testament to the industry, ingenuity and perseverance of mankind. Some of them, like the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal or the Acropolis, are famous throughout the world but many are little known. Were you to visit the spectacular lagoon at Dakhla or the beautiful temple of Wat Tham Paplong for example there is still every chance that you would be the only tourist there.

Undoubtedly travel and tourism can have a damaging effect as visitors to some of the world`s most famous cities and monuments can readily testify. Some particularly popular places, the city of Venice or Egypt`s Valley of the Kings for example, can at certain times of year be - and feel - almost overwhelmed by the sheer number of visitors and your pleasure at finally reaching your eagerly awaited must-visit destination can be marred by the presence of just too many human beings. Sometimes you can dramatically improve the experience if you simply avoid making your trip during the busiest time of the year. Venice or Florence are still beautiful in the winter months. The Valley of the Kings is equally amazing in August - though admittedly the weather will be hot.

There are also many positive and important benefits from international travel and tourism - probably now the world`s biggest single business. Some of these, like tourists spending and the provision of employment are quite obvious. Yet others are arguably just as important if not so readily apparent - the breaking down of national barriers, understanding other people`s habits, thinking and cultures, a shared pride in the fruits of the endeavours of one`s fellow man.

Of course the travelling to your must- visit destination can often be as interesting and as much fun as the arriving there. The people you meet, the hotels you stay at, the meals you eat, the trips you take on the local trains, buses or taxis - once you return home your memories or your visit will be of the journey and the whole experience and not just of the destination itself.

The great thing about taking this much-needed respite is that it gives you a chance to spend some quality time with your partner away from the kids. You don't have to be restricted to events that are for families. You can go to more mature events and rekindle that special connection with each other. This gives you a chance to regroup and relax before that new baby comes. It is also a great way for you to rewind before you go back to your children.

If you need help planning your special vacation and you are fresh out of ideas of where to go, contact your travel representative and pick their brain for suggestions. Chances are they have a wide selection of affordable places you could go and can quickly arrange all of your accommodations. If you know of a couple who is currently expecting a child, you could also give them a Babymoon for a baby shower gift. It would be a perfect time to give them one more last hoorah before their life becomes all about baby.

Would You Take a Poverty Tour?

This week I came across an article highlighting the growing trend of poverty tours. The writer described a developing avenue of the tourism industry in which travelers connect with a local tour company that takes them around a slum for a few hours to show them what poverty looks like in the developing world. I believe this concept raises some important ethical considerations for travelers.

Are "poverty tours" ethical? Can they really help the community, or are they merely exploiting vulnerable people?

The thought of a group of tourists descending upon a poverty-ridden area in their 15-passenger van, wearing designer clothes, with cameras dangling from their necks really unsettles me. I am reluctant because I believe such a tour puts people living in poverty on display and invades their lives. What would I think if someone drove up and down my suburban American street snapping photos of me and staring in utter amazement as I take out the garbage or wash my car? It seems absurd. What kind of message does this send to people experiencing poverty? I should think I might feel rather humiliated.

But am I hypocritical? Don't these "poverty tourists" have good intentions - to learn, to be challenged, to make a difference? Do I not do the same thing when I travel? After all, I want to see how people really live. So I snap photos, albeit discretely, so that I can show people at home what poverty looks like in the developing world... right?

To be honest, I actually enjoy leaving this American life of excess and going to a place where I can experience (at least on some level) what two-thirds of the planet lives like every day. It just feels so real and uncensored. My visits to garbage cities in Egypt, rural communities in Peru, and impoverished villages in Uganda are the travel experiences that produced the greatest change in me.

So why then do I hesitate to support an avenue of the tourism industry that helps facilitate similar experiences for other travelers?

I think the reason is because the tours in question do not actually create those same experiences for travelers. I was able to visit these places because I spent time volunteering there, helping to empower impoverished communities rather than simply tour them; I formed relationships with the community residents rather than just driving by them. Poverty tours leave out the key elements of engagement, contribution, and exchange.

I'm not here to pass judgement on anyone who has signed up for or taken one of these so-called "poverty tours." Actually, the fact that you have done so or have considered doing so is admirable because I truly believe your intentions were altruistic. You also were willing to put yourself in an uncomfortable, perhaps even dangerous situation, which is something not every traveler will do.

Nonetheless, my concern persists. I fear poverty tours will not really lead to change, and that they could actually do more harm than good to the community, as well as to the traveler. We have a responsibility as citizens of the world to ensure we make ethical choices when we travel. This does not mean we should never visit a slum, but it does mean we should carefully consider the most responsible means of doing so.

If you are considering a trip that brings you face to face with extreme poverty, or specifically a "poverty tour," here are some questions to consider before making your decision:

1.) Does the money I spend on the tour go toward helping this community?

Is someone from the community serving as the tour guide? Are the profits from the tours reinvested into education, healthcare, or economic development of the community? Do thorough research. Ask detailed questions of your tour company. Find out how they are using the money, and if it is not reinvested in the community, thoughtfully consider whether or not your touring the community will really have a positive impact on the people who live there.

2.) What are my motivations for taking such a tour?

Do you want to see poverty and develop a better understanding of it? Do you seek an understanding of poverty that will inspire you to action? Or do you simply want to teach your child why he should not waste his food? People experiencing poverty are not tourist attractions. They are not there to be gawked at or marveled over any more than you and I are. Be discrete, and make sure your motives involve a desire to take action.

3.) Would I take such a tour in my own community if given the opportunity?

This is a tough one. How many of us would take a poverty tour in a foreign country but not in our own? How many of us will volunteer for a few weeks to help orphans in Uganda, but are slow to jump at the chance to care for the poor in our own community? We wouldn't be caught dead going into such and such part of town. We think we'll be shot. Our car will be stolen. And besides, it's just not as glamorous to spend a weekend at a local soup kitchen as it is to travel overseas. We are less afraid to venture into one of the most notorious slums in Africa than we are to drive our locked car into America's inner-cities? Sadly, I am guilty of all of these thoughts myself. Before you take a tour of a community halfway across the world, take an afternoon and spend some time getting to know your own. None of us is as far removed from poverty as we would like to think.

4.) Is there another way I can develop an understanding of extreme poverty that instead encourages community engagement?

Instead of touring poverty or seeing poverty - engage with the people who live it. These relationships are what leads to positive and lasting change. We're big advocates of relational travel, but we recognize this is not easy. It takes time and effort. We suggest a few options to make it easier:

Volunteer. We have both volunteered on service trips with our church and other faith-based organizations. These opportunities have taken us into some of the most impoverished communities in Egypt, Uganda, and the Dominican Republic, as well as Orlando, Hartford, New York, and Washington, D.C. in the United States. These trips have ranged anywhere from one day to one week to one month.

Try a home-stay. If volunteering is not your style, then perhaps a local home-stay option is appropriate for you. You can stay for as little or as long as you like, and they are available most anywhere in the world. We spent the night with a family on the Isla Taquile at Lake Titicaca in Peru. We learned a lot about their lifestyle and traditions, played with the kids, ate some delicious home-made food, and learned about their community.

5.) Am I prepared to respond to what I will see?

What will you do with the knowledge you acquire on this "poverty tour?" Will you live any differently? Will you give to charities? If so, which ones? Will you educate your friends and family? Will your newly acquired knowledge impact your habits as a consumer and/or traveler? However you choose to take action, you have a responsibility to do something with this knowledge.

One reason people are turned off by poverty, or are afraid of it, is because they really have no clue what to do about it. That depresses them and overwhelms them, so they'd rather stick to the more pleasant places to travel. After all, it is a vacation, right? I don't blame them. Taking action is not easy. But it's important. Your tour company or guide should provide you with a few simple action steps as to how you can apply your knowledge of poverty, deepen your understanding, and impact change. If they don't, research it independently, or, contact us. We would love to share our thoughts with you.

Have you ever taken a "poverty tour?" Do you think they are ethical?

Have you volunteered abroad? What are your thoughts on how travelers can have a positive impact on global poverty reduction?

Dog and Cat Boarding: Comforting Your Pet

It isn't easy to entrust your pet to a dog and cat boarding kennel. In fact, the experience is probably harder on you than it is on your pet. Still, it's only natural to try and make the experience and separation anxiety as painless as possible for your pup or kitty. If you do suspect that your pet will undergo some anxiety in the process, putting a few tricks to use can help to make them a bit calmer and accepting of their hotel stay. It can also ease your own mind, which may be closer to the point. Here are some of the things you can do to comfort your pet.

Put on a Happy Face

Animal behaviorists differ when it comes to how much your pets can pick up from your emotional state. Some say they can instantly sense when something is wrong, while others say this is mostly personification on the part of the owner's. And, clearly, each pet is different in this respect. If you have the type of pet who gets anxious or troubled when you are feeling like emotions, do your best to put on a happy face when heading to the dog and cat boarding kennel. The better attitude you have about the situation, the more likely it is that your pet will handle the transition smoothly.

Objects From Home

Your pet will feel much more comfortable in their temporary setting if they have something comforting from home. If there is a ball they like to play with or a bone they like to chew on, consider bringing it with you and leaving it with them as they enter the dog and cat boarding kennel. Most kennels are more than happy to allow this, as they know how much calmer it can make the pet. Think of it in terms of yourself. If you were going to be away from home for an extended period of time, wouldn't it ease your mind to have something familiar to look at once in a while?

Special Food

Does your pet get sick whenever you change out his or her food? If so, you may want to consider handing over the pet's usual food to the dog and cat boarding kennel when dropping them off. Kennels have different rules regarding this, of course, so you may want to ask in advance whether they allow outside food. If you don't want to do this, of course, almost all kennels will provide the food as part of their services.

La Tomatina, Spain's Tomato Throwing Festival and Largest Food Fight on the Planet

"We came, we saw, we Tomatina'd!"

Bunol, Spain. Sultry Mediterranean climate, delectable cuisine, sweet sangria and home of the largest food fight on the planet. The edible ammunition of choice... tomatoes!

Whether the initial volley was aimed at crooked city officials or the disorderly act of town hooligans, townspeople caught in the crossfire enjoyed the festivities so much, it has been celebrated every year since 1945.

Held on the last Wednesday of August, the now internationally acclaimed celebration, La Tomatina, draws thousands of Spanish and international tourists alike for what promises to be the fight of their lives!

With Sangria in hand and sporting the latest fashions in tomato-fighting apparel, a crisp, white tank top and sassy pair of red-rimmed goggles, I arrived to Bunol ready for war! The battlefield: one long, narrow cobbled street. The goal: get as dirty as possible.

Immediately swept into the flow of human traffic, finding the festival was the least of my posse's concerns. Staying together was. Wrapping arms and linking hands, we boldly sliced into the mounting mob of people. Ducking, weaving and squeezing through whatever small openings inadvertently afforded, "Team Tom" surged forward. Pressing through the crowd's outer layer, our inward assault soon met a more severe resistance. An impenetrable wall of bodies constructed of just as eager and determined participants.

It was then that the life and energy of La Tomatina washed over me. Well, that and a dozen or so buckets of water raining down from above. Gleefully hanging out their apartment windows overhead, mischievous children, geriatric enthusiasts and my personal favorite, Spanish cougars sporting their most revealing bikinis, all joined in the colossal hydration effort. Chanting in unison, "Agua, Agua," the sweltering crowd below summoned lofty locals from their perches, rewarded with buckets of liquid salvation.

Lunging toward the glistening cascades, water had never seemed so vital. SPLASH! Hydrating parched lips, cooling sweaty skin and preventing more than a few heat-induced surrenders, the refreshing showers continued to revitalize our tomato-fighting spirits!

Akin to an hourglass of sand, the crowd was like nothing I had ever experienced before. Just as one granule shifted or fell through, another would replace it. Wedged between amorous Spanish men, macho Americans, brave Japanese and crazed Aussies, I could hardly breathe without losing precious inhalation space to an elbow, chest or face.

BOOM - a cannon rang out and the crowd erupted. Someone must have retrieved the famed ham bone from atop the greased pole, the traditional start to the festival. Let the fight begin!

A few lone kamikaze-style tomatoes flew through the air, further stirring the crowd, but it wasn't until the first lorrie came into sight that the real excitement kicked in.

Hogging over half the narrow street, the first lorrie grinded its way through the crowd. As it parted the red sea in a most assertive manner ("honk, honk!"), mid-street inhabitants tried desperately to squeeze into the crowd's perimeter, while those already on the edges crunched dangerously closer to admit them. But the plain laws of physics won out. There was simply not enough room. Literally pushed out the back of the festival, many pour souls who fought valiantly to maintain their forward positions watched their red-laced dreams disappear into the grill of a big, blaring lorrie.

Plastered against the wall of people, I just barely secured a spot on the perimeter when the lorrie came rumbling by. Passing inches in front of my terrified face, if the mob would have surged forward in those perilous moments, tomatoes would not have been the only street salsa produced.

Suddenly, the lorrie stopped. A rickety steel door slid open and a wall of tomatoes spewed forth! Almost knocked off my feet, I was knee deep in tomatoes. No step was solid anymore - my every move dictated by the sliding salsa below. There was only one thing left to do... "Fight!"

Bending over to grab handfuls of the lorrie's prized cargo, I slung tomatoes like my life depended on it. Led by their fleshy red shells and trailed by the hued reds of their innards, tomatoes flew through the sky like stray comets. Providing the first line of defense, my goggles protected my eyes from the initial onslaught, but even they could not avoid the red curtain.

The crowd no longer had the purpose of moving forward; it gyrated every which way. At times lifted off my feet and onto the person in front of me, I gave into the pressure and, quite literally, went with the flow.

A second "BOOM" rang out, and the final lorrie turned out of sight. Eleven lorries, 40,000 participants, one metric ton of tomatoes, and an hour later the fight was officially finished but unofficially still open.

Some left the festival as they had arrived, excited and energized, while others departed looking worse for wear. But all participants shared one glorious characteristic - the look of triumph!

As fast as the festival washed over, it was washed away. Opening throttle on their high-pressure hoses, firemen began to cleanse the streets while local residents offered garden hose showers. But we weren't done yet!

An undulation in the cobblestone road, creating a deep tomato pool, proved irresistible. Splashing in face first, tomato puree kicked up all around. Blissfully unaware of the sludge's true content, I flopped around like a maniac. It wasn't until I stopped to smell the roses that my upchuck reflex kicked in. The smell of vomit, urine and who knows what other bodily secretions filled my nose. We weren't just swimming in tomatoes, we were swimming in humanity!

After one smashing good time, we not only survived the largest food fight on the planet, we emerged with flying colors!

Sui-Tang Dynasties in History of China

Yang Jian overthrew the Northern Zhou Regime and established the Sui dynasty (581-618) in 581 with the capital as Chang'an (present Xi'an), terminating the political fragmentations that had lasted for over 300 years since the Western Jin dynasty (265-317), and it was another unified dynasty following the Qin and the Han dynasties, so Yang Jian claimed himself Emperor Suiwendi.

As one of the greatest dynasties in Chinese history, a number of far-reaching reforms were successively taken during the Sui dynasty, including the equal-field system (the farmland system) and taxation system of payment in kind and labor adopted in economy, the system of the civil-service examination and the system of three provinces and six ministries adopted in politics and the system of prefectural military commands adopted in military.

Yang Guang (the later Emperor Suiyangdi) ascended the throne after the death of Emperor Suiwendi, who ordered to build the world-famous Jing-Hang Cannel (from Beijing to Hangzhou) to enhance his dominance over the Southeast China during his reign, greatly promoting the economic and cultural communication between North China and South China. Emperor Suiyangdi was always weltering in luxury and pleasure and levied heavy taxation from the laboring people later, which directed led to a series of uprisings across the nation, ending with the demise of the Sui dynasty.

As one of the most prosperous dynasties in ancient Chinese history, the Tang Dynasty (618-907) was founded by Li Yuan with Chang'an as capital (the present Xi'an) in 618, preceded by the Sui Dynasty (581-618), which was very prosperous during the reign of Emperor Li Shimin, and it was called "Zhenguan Period" (a golden times in the history of China) by the later generations. The most advanced civilization in the world was created during the Tang dynasty, when Chang'an was the biggest city in the world. The first and the only Empress regnant Wu Zetian (the concubine of Emperor Gaozong) moved capital from Chang'an to Luoyang in 690, with "Zhou" as state title, taking Buddhism as the National Religion, and she ordered to build Buddhist temples and Longmen Grottoes during her reign. Emperor Zhongzong resumed "Tang" as state title in 705 and relocated Chang'an as capital. The Tang dynasty was at its peak time during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong and started to decline after the 8-year Anshi Rebellion, ending with demise in 907.

The system of the civil-service examination established in the Sui dynasty was a fair and scientific method to select the talents and it was inherited by the Tang dynasty. A number of neighboring countries had established friendly diplomatic relations with the Tang Empire, and Princess Wencheng married to the Sontzen Gampo (the governor) of Tubo (ancient name for Tibet) under imperial order and brought numerous silk fabrics and handicrafts with her, greatly promoting the economic and cultural development in Tubo. A number of international students and the diplomats were sent by foreign governments to Chang'an to learn Chinese culture, which substantially promoted economic and cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world.

Great progress was made in culture during the Tang dynasty, especially in the field of poetry, when a number of remarkable poets, such as Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi and Du Mu, appeared. Xuan Zang was sent to go on a pilgrimage to India for Buddhist scriptures under imperial order, and the Big Goose Pagoda in Chang'an was built for preserving Buddhist scriptures after his returning. The Tang rulers eschew religious intolerance, and the Buddhism, Taoism, Manicheism and Islamism found their wide acceptance in the Tang dynasty, resulting in a visage unprecedented prosperity in Chinese history.

A Few Great Reasons to Explore the Seychelles

When staying in one of the many hotels in the Seychelles the temptation is to just kick back and relax, never venturing far. This is a shame however, as the region has so much to discover. This article takes a look at a few of the reasons to get out and about in the Seychelles.

Beautiful Beaches

Just about all of the islands in the Seychelles boast their own set of spectacular beaches and no matter the resort you'll be within walking distance of one. You shouldn't limit yourself to just the one though, with the region sporting hundreds of beaches there's a great variety to discover. From great snorkelling beaches to stunning sandy bays, exploring the regions beaches is an excellent way to spend some time.

Island Hopping

As with the beaches the Seychelles is made up of over 100 islands, meaning there are plenty of destinations to explore. Hopping from island to island will allow you to experience the best of the region; whether it's the bird colonies on Bird Island, the stunning wildlife on Desroches Island, the beautiful forests on Praslin, or the diving on offer off the coast of Mahe, there really is something for everyone. Island hopping is also a great way to escape the crowds, with a number of small, uninhabited, islands available as a destination.

Scuba diving

The Seychelles region is famous for having some of the most stunning dive sites in the world, making it the ideal destination for any scuba enthusiast. You don't have to be an experienced diver to get the most of the regions waters either, with beginner diving schools on both Mahe and Praslin. If you want to experience the regions sea life, but don't feel up to diving, the other option is to try your hand at snorkelling, a great way to experience the aquatic realm just beneath the waves

Sailing charters

Our final great Seychelles activity is taking to the waters to sail around the region. There's no better way to take in the islands mix of granite rock formations, beautiful beaches, azure waters and swaying palm trees. The freedom of chartering your own boat also means you can stop off anywhere that takes your fancy, whether it's the regions beaches or the capital city Victoria. Hiring a chartered yacht couldn't be easier either, with a range of trips on offer, from one or two days to a week long tour of the islands.

Four Great Reasons to Pick a Mediterranean Cruise

Of all the cruise holidays around the world, the Mediterranean cruise experience is considered one of the most traditional and with good reason. The Mediterranean offers up a great combination of fascinating destinations and spectacular scenery, all from the comfort of a cruise ship. This article takes a look at a few of the reasons why you should consider a Mediterranean cruise for your next cruising experience.

Historical highlights

Seen as the cradle of civilization in the west, the Mediterranean region has a wide range of famous ancient sites. A cruise in the region will allow you to visit the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World and the famous Islamic city of Istanbul. Many of these ancient sites can be visited as part of a shore excursion, minimising the amount of travel that passengers would need to do. Cruising the Mediterranean Sea really does provide some great historic encounters.

Unpack just the once

A more general cruising plus is that once on board you only need to unpack the once. If you were visiting as large a number of Mediterranean destinations on a more regular holiday, a large portion of your time would be taken up with the logistics of moving your suitcases from hotel to hotel. A cruise however takes your accommodation with you, allowing you to unpack just the once and kick back and relax for the rest of the holiday.

Experience the Mediterranean Cuisine

Being surrounded by so many countries means that the Mediterranean is exposed to a wide range of cultures, allowing those cruising in the region the chance to experience some of the most interesting and varied food in the world. From the traditional Greek mousaka to Dubrovnik's fantastic seafood, there really is something for everyone to enjoy. If the local foods get a little much there's also the option of returning to the cruise ship for some more familiar fare.

The brilliant shopping

The Mediterranean has a number of the world's style capitals dotted along its coastline, making it the idea cruise holiday for a little shopping. The Italian cities give you the chance to indulge in some cutting edge fashion, while the Croatian city of Dubrovnik is the place to go to pickup a luxury silk necktie. If you're after something for the home then stopping in Turkey gives you the chance to nab one of the hand-woven silk rugs the country is famous for.

Visiting Isla Mujeres for the Weekend

Isla Mujeres (Isla) is by far one of Allan and my favorite spots to escape Playa del Carmen for a short weekend trip. Besides having one of the most beautiful beaches we've ever seen, Isla posses this wonderful island charm that is hard to come by. After having spent the past weekend exploring the island for the first time, both Allan and I are positive we'll be coming back again this summer.

Isla is only a 20 minute luxury, high speed ferry ride off the coast of Cancun at Puerto Juarez and only costs roughly $15 USD round trip per person. The ferries leave every half hour during the day providing a lot of flexibility for Allan and I, who tend to try to cramp a lot into one day are are usually running late for something.

Once in Isla the four of us crammed into a small taxi cab with luggage and within 4 minutes we had arrived at Cabanas del Maria del Mar on the north coast of the island. Isla is only about 5 miles long and 1 mile wide, which make tranversing the island very easy. Most people travel by golf cart!

The cabanas provided a no frills, comfortable option at an unbeatable price (roughly $40 USD for a double room per night). The price is usually twice that but since we asked for a locals' discount we were able to secure the discount. The hotel sits right on the beach and includes a small pool and free continental breakfast. The rooms are nothing special but given the price and location, we will definitely be booking again!

Our arrival in Isla was greeted with heavy downpours and amazing thunderstorms which provided a wonderful light show. The weather did not deter us from veturing out for a stroll and some dinner. Low season (May - October) is a perfect time to visit since no one is around. For dinner we enjoyed some Asian cuisine and great people watching. The restaurant was located on what I call restaurant alley. The street is charming yet a bit cramped with a myriad of ethnic restaurants from Argentian and Italian. Between the outdoor dining, the pedestrians and the restaurant employees eagerly trying to solicit our business, I would think the street in high season would become quite crowded.

Back at the hotel that evening Allan and I took a dip in the pool which was literally like bath water. I guess there is something as a pool being too hot. However, it was so refreshing enough and helped us to relax and sleep through the night.

We woke up next morning to a picture perfect day. The water was this amazingly light colored blue that has to be one of the most beautiful beach sites I have ever seen. We ate our free breakfast of toast, coffee and juice under a thatched roof over looking the water, listening to classical music. What a way to start the day!

We decided to rent 2 golf carts for roughly $30 USD each from 9am to 5pm and used these to get around the island. One cart could have sufficed for the 4 of us but that would have meant 2 of us would be sitting on the back facing backward.

Carting around the island was the ideal way to get around. There are not a lot of cars and you really feel like you are on a Caribbean island. Isla is absolutely beautiful with gorgeous beaches and it seems people really care for their homes and shops. Storefronts are well maintained and painted in bright Caribbean colors like light blue and yellow. Parks are well groomed and you don't see much poverty or rift raft.

Our first stop for the day was at a turtle farm where they breed and raise fresh water and sea turtles. It was a great way to see the turtles up close and even observe other sea creatures in tanks like sea horses and octopuses. You can pick up rays, fresh water turtles and conch, but not the sea turtles. Then in the ocean in a decent sized enclosure was a nurse shark. I'd say our local guide was one of the highlights as he let us break a few rules which I won't discuss here, and he added a lot of smiles and charm, always ready to help us or answer any questions (in Spanish).

After the turtle farm we went to visit the home of a very eccentric guy who built his home all from recycled materials. The base the home floats on is made from plastic bottles. His home was originally in Puerto Aventuras, but it was destroyed in a storm, so he rebuilt in Isla. We observed his make shift residence from the shore as it appeared he was not home. We actually don't know the owner, nor have every met him and as he was not expecting us, I am not entirely surprised he was out.

For lunch that day we enjoyed an incredible meal at Pita Amore. The menu is small and really only consists of pitas stuffed with meat like chicken or turkey and vegetables. However, the food is so delicious, it's not only highly rated on Trip Advisor, it's also been visited by celebrity Chef Jacques Pepin and is also now one of our favorite lunch spots in all of the Rivera Maya. The inside of the restaurant is a bit rustic, but the food is so good it doesn't matter.

After lunch we spent some time on the beach outside our hotel, as yachts moored not too far off shore. The water was a warm 85 degrees and you could wade out hundreds of feet on the soft sand. It was one of those days and places where we began to think how lucky we were to be living in such a beautiful spot. We reflected back on our lives and what brought us to this point in our lives. We contemplated our friends and family who were all mostly back in cold climates not enjoying the warm waters of the Caribbean. And it wasn't like this was just a rare vacation for us - we live only about an hour away, and Playa del Carmen is arguably just as nice.

Dinner that evening was scrumptious Mediterranean food at Olivias which consisted of pita, kebabs, salad and moussaka. Olivias is also well rated on Trip Advisor. Without a doubt we'll be returning for dinner on our next trip this summer.

The following day was cloudy, but that did not prevent Scot and Allan from partaking in a small snorkeling adventure in a small inlet within walking distance of our cabanas at the Avalon Reef Club. From what I hear the variety and quantity of fish marvel that of Puerto Morelos. Scot and Allan think the hotel must feed the fish to keep so many in such a small area.

After snorkeling it was time to leave the wonderful island. Allan and I were already mentally planning another trip back before even departing. Isla Mujeres is just so charming and beautiful. We expect to return over and over!

Best San Diego Hotels

I travel quite often for work, most of the time down to San Diego, as most of my clients are there. When I visit the city, I prefer to stay in the downtown area, as I feel it offers me the most options as far as ease of access, dining, and activities (if I have any spare time). Traveling as much as I do, I feel that that I have become a pretty good judge of what to look for in a hotel when it comes to business travel, and have shared some of my insights on the best hotels for business below.

Homewood Suites San Diego Airport:

Close to the airport, this is an ideal hotel for those traveling to San Diego with strictly business on their minds. Its proximity to the airport makes getting there and back very painless, and the rooms are created with the business traveler in mind. The rooms include a spacious work desk, a ¾ kitchen, full size refrigerator, stove top, and wireless and wired internet. A part of the Hilton family, the hotel maintains the class and quality of its mother company, but again, is created with business travelers in mind. My favorite part of the hotel is that breakfast is available seven days a week adjacent to the lobby. Dinner is also provided Monday - Thursday.

Residence Inn San Diego Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter:

This hotel is located a little further from the airport than the Homewood Suites, near the Gaslamp Quarter of the city, but was also created with business travelers and those seeking extended stays in mind. I stayed here for a convention once, as it is a short five minute walk away which is very convenient, especially because as you are aware I'm sure, oftentimes conventions start early in the morning, so it is nice not having to factor travel time into your morning. The service at this hotel is what really set it apart for me, the front desk was friendly and efficient, and had great recommendations when it came to dining and attractions in the area. The hotel is smaller than some of the others in the area, giving it a "boutique" feel that I also enjoyed.

Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter:

This centrally located hotel includes all the abundant amenities of a Hilton, plus a beauty salon, swimming pool, meeting facilities with a full-service business center and on-site, 24-hour fitness center. Its proximity to the convention center makes it ideal for those traveling for conventions in the city.

Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Airport

Another hotel located near the airport, the Courtyard is the Marriott family's version of an extended/business travel hotel. Hands down the best thing about it for me is the free parking, which is hard to come by at a lot of the hotels downtown. Located on the water, the rooms also offer fantastic views which are nice, especially when working from your room. Rooms include a fridge, internet, and are reasonably sized, and very clean.

I hope this guide to the best San Diego hotels is helpful for those of you traveling for business, let me know if you have any recommendations as well!

Niagara Falls - A Lifetime Experience

This long weekend (2011, Sept 2-5) made a life long memory to cherish. We went to visit Niagara falls, Buffalo, New york. It was almost 901 miles from Rochester, Minnesota. We rented a car and started from home on Friday evening. After a long drive and one night stay in Hammond, Indiana and another longer and eventful drive on next day we reached Niagara on Saturday. The cloudy weather and scattered rain fall could not make the 7 musketeers feeling blue.

Me, my husband, our two kids, and three friends - no doubt we made a perfect group. And I must admit that my kids (3.5 years) are excellent travelers. The main attraction points are all located side by side in the Niagara State Park. There is sufficient parking spaces (paid) for cars. State park offers their own trolly service. We took several rides to avoid lots of walking. The main attraction is' Maid of the Mist'. This is a cruise tour that will take you near the falls. And you will get soaked all over.

Other attraction points are cave of the wind, goat island, 3 sisters island, terrapin point etc. Niagara (means thundering water) is so huge and vast that I can not even describe my feelings in words. This is something you have to see if you want to get the true feeling of its beauty. Somehow I felt that even my senses are not able to behold its beauty and vastness. This amazing creation of nature will compel you to feel respect towards mother nature. Standing in front of Niagara I just could thought that how small we are before this universe.

Every night Niagara falls are illuminated with lights and there is a fireworks show in every month.

I found it as a budget friendly travel destination. You would find lots of hotels and motels there like Super8, Motel 6 etc. Another thing I must mention that just 2 or 3 blocks away from the main entrance of the park there are some excellent street food vendors. We ate our lunch in one of them with sheek kabab and jeera rice. Food was excellent and also cheap.

One important tip I want to share that if you want to take pictures in 'Maid of the Mist', (We all want to), always always carry a waterproof lens protector or cover your camera with a ziplock. Otherwise it will all get soaked in water. My camera stopped working just after that voyage and I was lucky enough to get a spare one from one of my friend. You are welcome to see some beautiful pictures in my blog.

Top 5 Travel Apps

In today's technology-obsessed world, the smartphone is one of the most innovative inventions out there, revolutionising the way we use our phones and computers. One of its most remarkable features is its adaptability; the way it becomes so useful when we're out and about and need it the most. For instance, when we are travelling we don't need to worry about packing the bulky laptop when we have a smartphone which can perform a multitude of tasks. Another prominent feature is the amount of whimsical and creative apps that it has produced, and here are some of the best travel apps associated with the smartphone:

TripIt

This is a perfect app for frequent travellers and is available on a wide range of smartphone platforms; the crafty little app allows you to control all aspects of your trip preparation and forwards all your travel documents to the app location, meaning you do not have to do anything yourself, but sit back as TripIt does it for you. In addition, the app allows you to sync your plans in with your calendar and permits access to your social media platforms so you can share your progress with friends and family; a must have on any smartphone.

Kayak

Now the best travel search engine can be with you wherever you go with this quaint little app which allows you to search for any number of things such as flights, cars, hotels, and bookings. You are able to completely customise it to your ideal settings, and with its many upgrades, the interface has never been so interactive, with many different aspects which work together to make this the top travel search engine around. Quite simply, this app does everything; from baggage prices to finding food at the airport, there is no shortage of aid here and it's an absolute must for any keen traveller.

XE Currency

Keep up to date with an ever-changing financial world; the XE Currency app allows you to track the changes in currency that you'll need to have knowledge about when converting your money to the specific currency of your destination. The app is free and charters over 150 specific currencies in a live-update for the comfort and knowledge of the customer. It also stores any local changes directly to your phone, meaning that an internet connection is not required and they are available to you wherever you are.

Transit App

A creative addition to the apps already listed, the Transit app has live and updated records of over 20 major underground systems around the world. Maps can be stored to your phone offline, meaning that again an internet connection is not required in case you are underground at that point. The app also comes with a 'Locate Me' device which tracks your position and indicates your nearest station. Whilst the app is not free, its benefits are clear to see.

Google Translate

This app does exactly what it says on the tin; if you're travelling abroad, then it's likely you're going to be around people and places with names you won't be able to understand, speaking languages that you're not familiar with and this can make it difficult if you're out shopping, or looking to explore. With Google Translate, you need not worry about such problems, and in the blink of an eye, you are able to speak the words into your phone, or even take advantage of the app's unique image-recognition technology which enables you to translate signs and words by simply snapping it with your phone. With over 60 different universal languages, this is a priceless addition.

Essential Items for Whale Watching

Going out on a whale watching cruise, seeing whales at play in their natural habitat, namely the ocean, requires planning of what to take along for your trip. Firstly, if you are a person prone to seasickness, make sure that you have pills with you to combat any queasiness. You do not want to spoil your outing on the sea, or that of others with you, who do not suffer the same way.

Basics not to be forgotten

  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen, essential both in winter and summer
  • Camera plus extra batteries
  • Binoculars
  • Plastic water bottle
  • Snacks for nibbling or prepacked lunch if none aboard

It is always a good idea wearing flat shoes on board a boat; preferably sneakers or tennis shoes with rubber soles. Decks often become slippery, the sea may become choppy, and the rubber gives you grip when you move about.

Essential Clothing

Take along a waterproof jacket or a windbreaker for protection against the spray, and a thick jersey. You can always take them off if it gets hot, but if you do not have them with you and the weather turns cold, you will freeze and feel most miserable. On the sea, the weather is prone to do instant turnabout, hot to cold, or vice-versa.

In other words, no matter how blue the sky is when you wake in the morning, you never can accurately forecast the weather for the rest of the day on the sea.

Taking along a rug, is not essential, but a good idea, the same with gloves, especially in winter. Take hats with a brim in preference to a cap. It gives better protection for ears and the back of the neck, which have a tendency to quickly become burnt, both winter and summer on the sea.

You can always go inside if there is an inside cabin on the boat, but it is not the same as watching whales from the deck, and really, this is what whale watching tours are all about.

Extras for children

Take a colouring-in book and crayons, or reading books for children until whales are sighted. They do need the extra occupation, otherwise boredom sets in and this has the potential of irritation for other adults on board. Some cool drinks, sandwiches and biscuits are also a good idea for keeping them happy. Take the time to educate your children about why whale watching tours are more than just a nice day out on the ocean, and if old enough, make sure they listen to the guide.

Vacation Spots for the Family

When choosing vacation spots, there are several factors that need to be taken into consideration. These factors should always be considered because they can spell enjoyment or dissatisfaction during the trip. One of the most important things to take into consideration when thinking of going on a trip with the family is the age group of the members who will be travelling. It is best for a mostly teen oriented age group to go on a trip that is adventurous for their age. Water sports, the beach and fun night outs may be several of the highlights for this bracket. For groups with much older members or with smaller children, the beach might also be fun but with some limitations with regards to their safety when it comes to water activities and swimming. Many establishments have rules and regulations with regards to safety and age of their guests. The interests of the group or family seeking vacation spots should also be considered. Outdoorsy types will likely opt for camping and other adventurous pursuits while those who like to wallow in the lap of luxury will likely go for luxurious resorts and hotels that cater to their every whim and desire. There are also some people who have spotted a specific place to go to and have set their hearts to go there.

Ideal Family Places

There are plenty of vacation spots that are ideal for families in the United States of America. In Texas, there are several National Parks that allow campers to stay for several days. For this to happen, though, the campers will need to acquire permits and prove that they are actually capable of the feat. There are some places in Texas that have categories for their campers. This makes it easier for novices and more enjoyable for those who enjoy the wilds. Other than camping in National Parks in Texas, there are also several ranches that offer tours that encompass several days.

These tours let the city clickers enjoy real life on the range or just a stay in a ranch house for those who are not up to staying out. People of all ages are sure to find something that they like in the Texas tours. In Alaska, some tours also include a dogsled trip that will take the vacationers from one town to another, letting them enjoy the thrill and fun of navigating and controlling the dogs. Children can take advantage of tours that are not too long and stay warm every night at a resort or inn. These vacation spots are most unique when it comes to the level of enjoyment that they offer each member of the family. Even in the cities that are more sophisticated and less adventurous, there are also some places, which will offer enjoyment and fun for families. New York has tours that will show people their landmarks and places of note. In California, some tours offer a peek at the houses used for movies and even houses of celebrities.

5 Tips For Where To Get Cheap Holidays

Your holiday is almost upon you. The destination has been arranged and where to get cheap holidays has been decided. The time of year has been agreed. Lists have been prepared and the countdown has begun. However, there are 5 tips you can use to ensure a smooth journey

1. Watch your timings

Contact your departure airport well before you start your vacation and ask them the time that you should arrive before the flight departure. Some airlines will expect you to book in at least 3 hours before you fly. You want a hassle-free check-in and by arriving in plenty of time, this can be assured.

If you are taking your car, ascertain the amount of spaces available at the airport. You can usually get good deals on parking from car parks based a short distance from the airport, with free transport to the airline. This adds to the value of where to get cheap holidays, giving you more money to spend. I find airport parking usually very expensive. Allow plenty of time to travel to the parking facility, just in case of a breakdown, traffic congestion or accidents. Check the local radio regularly for any indication of traffic problems on the route you are taking.

Some time can be saved by pre-checking in on an airline's website, perhaps up to an hour or more. This is usually the case, however, when you have hand baggage only and not larger suitcases.

2. Check your luggage

People always tend to pack too much into their luggage, even for short holidays. They find that they are needlessly carrying too much which is eventually not used or is not required on vacation. If you are going to a warm country, you will not need suits, jackets or heavy jeans. Take shorts, (not too many), tee-shirts, perhaps a smart pair of trousers for the evening and forget the socks!

You will require more clothing for 2 weeks than for 1 week. Even with a 2 week holiday, many destinations have laundering facilities, which can be used to wash, dry-clean and iron any used and/or dirty clothing.

Many people ask where to get cheap holidays, but forget about how they can save money before and during their vacation.

I always use toiletry travel-kits. The containers are smaller and therefore lighter. Items to include are toothpaste and disposable toothbrush, soap, shampoo and hair-conditioner. If you wear contact lenses, use travel kits, which, like toiletries, are much smaller than their full size counterparts.

Once these items are used, they can be thrown away, to leave plenty of room in your baggage for gifts.

When luggage is being checked-in, allow for some delay. During peak periods and on popular flights, the delay could well become extended. This is one good reason to travel outside peak days and times. It may seem an infinity waiting in the baggage line, but as you have allowed additional time, there is no need to panic.

Many airlines, especially the budget companies, are very strict on luggage weights. Ensure you weigh your baggage before you leave home. If you go over the weight allowance, check how much extra you have to pay by contacting the airline.

Sometimes your luggage can go missing. Take all your expensive items with you in travel bags, such as camera, phone, meds, spectacles, money, passport and any tickets. Don't place one person's clothing in one case, place some of each person's clothing in different cases. Therefore if one suitcase gets lost, there will still be something to wear, as some of their clothing is also in another bag.

3. Maintain security

You may well have studied in great detail of where to get cheap holidays but one thing that is of paramount importance is security.

The world of travel changed forever since the 9/11 atrocities. Security must be in the foremost of your thoughts and plans when embarking on a journey. If you are parking in an airport, it is likely your car will be searched.

X-rays are used at most departure areas. Any strange shaped objects can give cause for alarm by the baggage checker. Ensure these items are placed within easy reach by the officer if he/she needs to check the item.

Under no circumstances mention anything to do with bombs, terrorists, guns, knives or any other weapons whilst waiting for your flight. Even as a joke, it can land you in great trouble and possibly arrested, causing you to miss your plane.

4. The Airplane

After you enter the plane, look for your seat and place your hand luggage away as soon a possible. Ensure you then remain seated until the remainder of passengers have embarked. It can be quite annoying for other passengers if you continue to block the passage way for any length of time instead of settling down as quickly as possible. You can find more time to walk around the plane whilst you are in the air.

5. Deter theft

Several years ago whilst holidaying in Marjorca, my friend had his wallet stolen by somebody who barely bumped into him - it was a pickpocket. These people are highly trained and experienced thieves. Always be suspicious at airports, bus or railway terminuses, bus stops or even queueing at for drinks or food. A thief will try to distract you and can rob you quite quickly without your knowledge until it is too late.

Make sure you keep anything of value hidden. Money belts are a very good idea, but make sure it is solidly attached to you and hidden, with zippered or velcro fastenings. These fastenings make it difficult for a thief to open without making a noise.

So the five tips to ensure a smooth and stress-free holiday are timings, luggage, security, the airplane and theft which were covered above.

Follow these tips and a restful or adrenalin pumping holiday is just a journey away.

Mexico is a country of stunning landscapes, beautiful beaches and snow-capped volcanoes. It is known for its rich history, the archaeological monuments of the Aztecs and Maya, the colonial palaces which attract tourists.

The country has a sufficiently large number of them, but only a few are accessible, since most of the pyramids are covered with thick tropical vegetation, or buried under the soil, so that at first glance they look just like green hills.

Pyramids of Teotihuacan are among the most famous ancient constructions. Two of the largest and best preserved pyramids were dedicated to Maya gods of the moon and the sun. The largest pyramid in the world, the pyramid of Cholula, is bigger than the pyramid of Cheops, but unfortunately the larger part of the pyramid has collapsed. The first-class resorts in Mexico include Cancun, Playa de Carmen, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel, Mazatlan, and others.

In 1325, the Aztec Indians founded Mexico City. Legend has it that the gods commanded the Aztecs to build the capital there. Nowadays it is the oldest and most rapidly developing city of the New World, as well as the largest metropolis in the world. The city is a veritable open-air museum, there are more than 1,400 historical relics and monuments. The surroundings of Mexico City include dozens of parks and recreation centers, more than 2,000 restaurants, more than 80 museums, theaters, concert halls, 8 universities and several academies. The density of the population is enormous.

The area of El Zocalo is the center of the city, it is also known as Constitution Square, the second largest in the world, which is surrounded by colonial-era buildings. The most prominent ones are Cathedral Metropolitano and the Palace of Cortes. The most famous miraculously preserved Aztec building is Templo Mayor. Downtown area of Mexico City is a unique archaeological area with stone foundations of ancient buildings of the Aztecs, dominated by the Catholic cathedral and numerous modern apartment buildings.

A popular attraction is the park next to Alameda. Many tourists also visit the Palacio de Bella Art, where one can see the best works of Mexican culture. The pedestrian zone and the nightlife district, Zona Rosa, are marked by a variety of shops, stores, restaurants and cafes, all located in the heart of the giant megapolis.

Cancun is a network of beaches, resorts and parks, stretching for 140 km along the coast of the Caribbean Sea to the town of Tulum. The city consists of the business mainland and the resort island of 25 km. The coastal waters are decorated with coral reefs, which begin near the island of Conti (the second largest reef in the world). Few resorts can match the beauty of Cancun and the cleanness of the sea. Not far from the place, there is a good selection of archaeological sites and nature reserves, including the clean white beaches.

The port city of Acapulco is the famous 'Night Capital of Mexico': the city of entertainment, shows and restaurants. It is known for excellent beaches and restaurants, the Spanish fort of San Diego, and the beautiful Cathedral de la Soledad.

Yucatan Peninsula is the cradle of Mayan civilization and the center of a huge number of archaeological sites, which attracts many fans of action sports and diving.
